The implementation of key transport infrastructure investments under the strategic project CrossBo 2 continues to deliver tangible results, strengthening connectivity, accessibility and road safety across the Greek-Bulgarian border region.
Major Progress on Road Infrastructure in Bulgaria
Significant advancements have been achieved on the construction of the Road II-86 Rudozem Bypass, one of the project’s flagship investments. Since the commencement of works in June 2024, approximately 70% of construction activities have been completed.
Major works carried out include extensive earthworks, drainage infrastructure, new road pavement construction, retaining and supporting walls, reconstruction of utility networks and bridge works over the Arda and Chepinska rivers. A new roundabout has also been constructed to improve traffic flow and road safety. The project is expected to substantially improve mobility in the area while reducing traffic congestion within the urban environment of Rudozem.

Another important milestone was reached with the completion of the Road Structure at km 134+380 on Road II-86. The construction works were finalized in November 2025, and the relevant completion certificate (Act No. 15) was signed in December 2025. Preparations for commissioning are currently underway, bringing this critical infrastructure element one step closer to operation.
The project is also making steady progress along Road I-5 Kardzhali – Makaza, a strategic route linking the region with the border crossing. Construction activities began in March 2025 and currently key achievements include the construction of a new roundabout in Kardzhali and the completion of major utility network reconstructions. Works continue on road infrastructure, earthworks and asphalt paving.
Looking ahead, a new safety-oriented intervention has been prepared, including the widening of an existing bridge to accommodate four traffic lanes and the construction of a dedicated pedestrian and cycling bridge. This initiative is planned to be proposed for financing under the CrossBo2 project and will further enhance safety and sustainable mobility.
Designing the Future of Mobility in Smolyan
Progress has also been recorded in the development of the Main Road Communication (MRC) of Smolyan. Following the approval of the conceptual design by the Road Infrastructure Agency, the environmental assessment procedure has been successfully completed. The preparation of the technical detailed design is now underway, marking an important step towards the future implementation of this strategic urban mobility project.
Advancing Preparations for Works in Greece
On the Greek side of the border region, preparations for the implementation of major infrastructure investments have entered a decisive phase.
A significant milestone was achieved with the launch of the tender procedure for the construction of the Vertical Axis 70: Xanthi – Echinos – Greek-Bulgarian Borders, Subsection “Area of Bridge G3 and Adjacent Local Roads”. The contract, with an estimated budget of €6.13 million, was officially published in the Official Journal of the European Union in June 2026.
This investment represents a major step towards improving accessibility, connectivity and traffic safety along the Xanthi – Sminthi corridor, a key component of the wider transport network linking Greece and Bulgaria.

Through ongoing construction activities, completed infrastructure milestones and the launch of new investments, the project continues to contribute to safer roads, improved mobility and enhanced economic and social cohesion across the cross-border area. The progress achieved so far demonstrates the partners’ commitment to delivering modern, sustainable and resilient transport infrastructure that will benefit citizens, businesses and visitors on both sides of the border for years to come.
