On 20.04.2026, the kick-off meeting for the strategic project CrossBo 2 was held in Sofia. The necessity for border crossing and increased mobility between the two countries forms the basis of the project idea.
The project beneficiaries, the Road Infrastructure Agency (RIA) from Bulgaria and Egnatia Odos S.A. (EOSA) from Greece, exchanged information on the implementation of their activities/subprojects and the progress made so far. The purpose of the meeting was to provide an overview of the verification process and the cash flow plan. All Bulgarian subprojects are progressing well, whereas construction works for the Greek subprojects are expected to begin in late 2026 and will last for two years.
During the meeting, a new project partner was introduced, the Region of Eastern Macedonia and Thrace (REMTH). The proposed subprojects on behalf of the REMTH are related to an intervention to upgrade the road network safety in the mountainous area of the Regional Unit of Xanthi. The bidding process for the activities has been completed, and the contract is expected to be signed by the end of June.
Summing up the meeting, the project partners unanimously agreed to include REMTH as a new project partner and approved the proposed additional activities as “Travel Security Measures” for possible funding from the CrossBo 2 project. With the addition of new interventions and the involvement of a new responsible body for the implementation of travel security measures, the CrossBo 2 strategic project will become more comprehensive and integrated.
