
The Director of the General Directorate “Fire Safety and Civil Protection”, Chief Commissioner Alexander Dzhartov and the General Inspector of the Fire Service for Northern Greece, Lieutenant General Theodoros Kosmidis, officially opened, on the 6th of November 2025 in Blagoevgrad, the activities of the strategic project Floodguard 2 «Enhancing the capacity for prevention and response in case of floods and subsequent natural disasters and emergencies in the cross-border region».
The kick-off meeting continued with a technical meeting between both beneficiaries. The joint project management team, composed of representatives of the Bulgarian Regional Directorates “Fire Safety and Civil Protection” of Blagoevgrad, Kardjali, Haskovo and Smolyan and the Greek Fire Service in Athens, had the opportunity to discuss the cooperation activities foreseen within the project.
Some of the main project activities include the construction of a Joint Training Centre, unification of procedures and joint protocols for rapid response to floods, delivery of specialised and rescue equipment for floods, conducting specialised joint trainings and field exercises of first responders in Bulgaria and in Greece, training and information campaigns for the population on flood prevention measures.
The Managing Authority and the Joint Secretariat of the Interreg VI-A “Greece-Bulgaria 2021-2027” Programme support this strategic cooperation on flood prevention between the responsible Bulgarian and Greek Authorities in the cross-border region.
