Project Description

Summary

A major cross-border initiative is set to transform the sports and tourism landscape of Greece and Bulgaria. The “Game Changers” project brings together academic institutions and local authorities to create sustainable, inclusive, and modern sports infrastructures that will boost regional development. The project focuses on four key pillars of impact:

  • Green and Accessible Infrastructure: Upgrading university and municipal facilities in Thessaloniki, Thermi, Serres, and Blagoevgrad using eco-friendly materials and energy-efficient lighting, while ensuring 100% accessibility for people with disabilities.
  • 365-Day Tourism Pull: Extending the tourist season beyond peak months by establishing new sports hubs, including a new Adventure Park in Thermi and expanding the Rope Park in Blagoevgrad.
  • Cross-Border Synergy: Building a strong network of cooperation between Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, South-West University, the Municipality of Thermi, and the Municipality of Blagoevgrad to foster student, athlete, and tourist exchanges.
  • Local Economic Boost: Expected to attract over 6,500 visitors annually, directly benefiting local hospitality, tourism, and retail businesses across the border region.

By combining sustainability with sports innovation, the “Game Changers” project is not just upgrading facilities—it is co-creating a vibrant, interconnected destination. This initiative paves the way for a healthier, more inclusive, and economically resilient cross-border community.

Expected Results

Game Changers will foster the development and enhancement of sustainable tourism sites, strengthening their visibility and accessibility. The project will also support local creative businesses and tourism stakeholders in developing sustainable services linked to visitable cross-border regions and Sustainable Tourism Development plans for inclusive tourism. This will lead to increased economic opportunities, particularly for small businesses, sports clubs and tourist entrepreneurs.

The project boosts economic development by increasing the number of visitors in the cross-border area. Therefore, businesses in the tourism, hospitality, and sports sectors will benefit from the increased visitor spending and tourism demand. Also, by increasing social inclusion, communities in the CBA will benefit from enhanced sports tourism infrastructure, higher levels of economic activity and job creation.

Game Changers directly benefits local communities, athletic organisations, tourism professionals and visitors. Municipalities and cultural institutions will gain new tools and strategies to promote and manage athletic tourism sustainably. Small businesses and local sports clubs will receive capacity-building support, enhancing their ability to create marketable tourist products and experiences. Tourists will experience a richer, more engaging offering, while residents will benefit from increased awareness of athletic tourism and opportunities for participation.

By fostering cross-border collaboration and social innovation, the project contributes to a more inclusive and dynamic visitable landscape. The results will not only strengthen the visitable and touristic identity of the cross-border area, but also establish a replicable model for integrating tourism into regional development strategies, ensuring long-term impact beyond the project’s duration.

Expected Outcomes

Game Changers will support five sites within the cross-border area (CBA):

  • The development of an Athletic Campus at the Faculty of Physical Education and Sport Sciences of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki (AUTH), Greece.
  • The provision of modern sports equipment for the Faculty of Physical Education and Sport Sciences in Serres, Greece.
  • The creation of an Adventure Park in the Municipality of Thermi, Thessaloniki, Greece.
  • The establishment of an Athletic Campus at South-West University (SWU) in Blagoevgrad, Bulgaria.
  • The modernisation and expansion of the existing “Rope Park” attraction in Bachinovo Park, Blagoevgrad, Bulgaria.
Additional project outputs include several events: two information days, one joint cross-border event, one workshop and two sports tournaments to facilitate the exchange of good practices and strengthen cross-border cooperation; participation in one EU-level event, production of dissemination materials, and development of a comprehensive communication plan.

The project will benefit a wide range of target groups:

  • Project Beneficiaries: AUTH, SWU, Municipality of Thermi, and Municipality of Blagoevgrad
  • Local Communities: Communities in CBA will benefit from enhanced sports tourism infrastructure, increased economic activity and job creation.
  • Tourists and Visitors: They will gain access to a wider range of sports tourism activities and destinations.
  • Sports Enthusiasts: Athletes, adventurers, and recreational enthusiasts
  • Local Businesses: Businesses in the tourism, hospitality, and sports sectors.
  • People with disabilities: The project will provide modern accessible infrastructure and raise awareness.
